They did so through trade, bribery, extortions and when it was necessary they did so with violence. Through their mercenaries or their own army that protected their trade routes, their intresstes and when necessary waged war.
They did their bit of share of diplomacy with mighty kingdoms that needed delicacy and propper manners when handled.
